I have a web site, it looks fine and people seem to like it. Isn’t that enough?
A web site, like any technology, is just a tool. To make something happen, a tool needs to be put to intelligent use. And once it is put to a use, then its effectiveness needs to be evaluated. Your web site promotes and represents your business and must communicate what Internet searchers are looking for, as well as serve their needs. It needs to be alive and it requires ongoing marketing to really make it work.
I have been told I need to do Social Media. What is it and why do I need it?
Social Media can be confusing and the technologies involved are constantly changing. But, under all of that, it is still just good, old-fashioned communication between people that fuels it. Social Media just takes it to an entirely new level of communication and sharing that was not possible in the past.
Properly done, a Social Media campaign is not just a pebble creating ripples in the water. It is each “ripple” tossing a “pebble” of its own into a new pond of its own, spreading rapidly out across your potential territory. And, just as importantly, it is founded upon the most solid and successful marketing principle of all time–word of mouth.
Isn’t Social Media mostly for young people?
There are over 500 million Facebook users. Of those over 50% earn above $50K a year and roughly 60% are 25 or older, in fact almost 40% of users are above the age of 35. Facebook may have started as a forum for college students but it has grown far beyond that demographic. It is not just for kids anymore and the majority of businesses today need a well thought out and executed marketing plan for a Facebook presence..
Is traditional marketing, such as direct mail, still effective?
Traditional marketing is not dead by any means, but:
1. It does not stand independently of your web presence
2. It has lost its effectiveness and is not a top-tier source of information
3. Is quite expensive.
It is a fundamental error to separate web marketing from traditional marketing. |
Does my web site work?
A web site is often judged on its appearance and emotional appeal, like an object. While it is true that a site should be attractive and pleasing to the eye, the real criterion can, and should, be measured in concrete terms. There are two key criteria: 1) How much is it helping to expand and build your business and 2) How effectively does it serve the needs of your clients to gather information, communicate, to complete a task or to buy a product.
I am doing what I always did, sending out post cards and so forth, but I am not getting the results or business I need.
Traditional sources of information, such as the Yellow Pages, postcards, print advertisements and so forth, have diminished in their importance and impact. Direct mail still has its place, but the hard facts are that the majority of individuals are going to the Internet for their information. An ad might spark interest, but that spark is almost always followed up by a visit to the business’s web site–as well as related searches for reviews, comparisons, social media references and any other information that the web could provide. A marketing program can still use traditional lines of promotion BUT must integrate effective web marketing to be successful.
I am already spending money on promotion, and have a web site. Why should I spend more on web marketing?
Simple answer, because it is the number one “go to” place for information and making buying decisions today. As such, the marketing of your web presence is connected to every other form of marketing and promotion that you do.
Web marketing has the added advantage of being one of the most cost effective and least expensive forms of marketing that one can do.
What about emails or faxes to my customers?
The email addresses of your clients can be a very effective resource in building a better business. What often happens, however, is that customer information is randomly gathered, poorly maintained and then inconsistently used. A regular program of sending out news, alerts, specials, company information and so forth can be very effective in growing a business.
Faxes are used less and less for marketing purposes these days.
We have a web guy that takes care of my site, shouldn’t he do the marketing?
It is very rare to find a Webmaster that also understands and has experience with marketing. Webmasters are typically well versed in technical knowledge and repairs, not marketing. Web marketing may use the Internet and technical tools to get the job done but the process is still marketing and requires those skills and focus to get the job done. |
